A Virgin Birth?
It’s 1984 and Charity Baker, aged 16, is pregnant.
Who is the father of her child? Could it be Alan, assistant pastor of the Crabapple Christian fellowship? Or could the father, as Charity is claiming, actually be God? Charity’s friend Joanne has her own reasons for needing an answer. But the truth, when it emerges, is dark enough to shake the strongest faith.
From a review of the first edition by Sam North, hackwriters.com
"Rosalie Warren writes with authority... This is a disturbing, powerful tale..."
From an reviewer of the first edition
Charity's Child is un-put-down-able - I read it in one sitting. Although targeted at teenage girls, it is highly readable for women of any age. It deals intelligently with some very uncomfortable issues;... religious fervour, marital breakdown, child abuse and the damage done to the minds of those involved. All the characters are absolutely credible and even the villains are treated to some sympathy in the search for understanding.
'Charity's Child' was first published by Circaidy Gregory Press in 2008. This is a revised edition. A sequel is underway.

Charity Child Dark Deed or Virgin Birth? eBook Rosalie Warren
The narrator plunges us immediately into the mystery of Charity's pregnancy, then takes us back to how it all began, when Charity arrived in town and joined the 'Crabbies'. Her religious fervour made her an instant favourite with the assistant pastor, and Joanne, the narrator. As the story unfolds and news of the pregnancy comes out, the Crabapple Christian Fellowship is tossed into turmoil. The story of Charity's Child is more than just the tale of two teenage girls trying to cope with the unexpected change. As Joanne tries to figure out her own sexuality and feelings for Charity, as well as the insistence that Charity's child was made by God, so the adults around them try to cope with their own issues, triggered by the potential scandal brewing in their midst.
I read the book in one day. It's very accessible and the narrative flows very easily. It is an easy book to read but one that gives the reader a lot to think about. The characters are engaging, wonderful and flawed.

Charity Child Dark Deed or Virgin Birth? eBook Rosalie Warren Reviews
I've read two other of Rosalie Warren's books, Coping with Chloe and Low Tide Lunan Bay. There's no stopping her, she pulls out the plug, sets off on a mission and it's a non-stop ride through the story. Rosalie Warren doesn't let up, she gets the characters talking and it's like they're talking to me! Her dialogue is impeccable, the people are real and the issues meaningful. This is really good writing. She tackles a difficult subject with a light touch, human, puzzling and often disturbing...like, who would think of writing about some teenage girl getting pregnant by God? Why not? A must-read.
What I particularly like about Rosalie Warren's books is that she isn't afraid of touching on difficult or sensitive issues, and she always handles them in a way that makes for enjoyable reading.
While Charity's Child does involve religion, lesbianism, child abuse and other serious issues, it's not as if this is a book written about these issues; these problems are just interwoven with the characters' lives. It's a great read that hooks you from the very beginning and holds onto you until the end.
Here's a great read. Strong characters and strong emotions. It's an adult book, but it's also one of those titles that crosses the adult/young-adult divide. Teachers will love it. Bad teachers because of the issues - child abuse, self-harm, lesbianism, religious conviction vs scepticism - and good teachers because of the way they're covered, in such a vivid and quietly humorous way. No racism, thank the Lord, and the characters don't carry the issues around like placards; in fact they rather lead you up the garden path. There's one - Tom - who irritates me a bit, but he gets the ending he deserves. Some subtle discussions about God along the way. You'll be hooked from the 1st page and you'll enjoy it.
